In the late 1960s, when the establishment of large private hospitals was not common, Seth Lokoomal Chanrai entrusted Dr Shantilal Mehta with the task of building an ultra-modern, centrally located medical centre where people of all races and creeds could receive advanced health care. Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre was built at Dr G. Deshmukh Marg, Peddar Road, overlooking the Arabian Sea in South Mumbai. It was inaugurated on 6th July 1973 by Prime Minister Mrs Indira Gandhi.
