Dharmagiri Hospital was established in 1934 on a hillock in Kothamangalam by Msgr. Joseph C. Panjikara the founder of the Medical Sisters of St. Joseph. Its purpose was to provide medical aid to the poor and marginalized in society.

St. Joseph's Hospital in Kothamangalam is an extension of Msgr. Panjikaran's original vision. It began as a small dispensary in 1953 and has since evolved into a fully-fledged multispecialty hospital with over 300 beds, offering quality healthcare to all sections of society at affordable prices.

In addition to various medical, surgical, and superspecialty services, the hospital houses a School of Nursing, an INC-recognized College of Nursing, and a School of Medical Laboratory Technology.
