The pioneer of bone marrow transplant in India, he was awarded the Dhanvantri Award in 2002, Padmashri in 2003, Lifetime Achievement in Oncology by Haward Medical International, Dr BC Roy Award, Padma Bhushan Award by the Government of India in 2012 for his contribution in the field of scientific research in medical oncology.

He transplanted bone marrow into a nine-year-old girl down with myeloid leukaemia from her brother. He was also a part of clinical trials to help children with lymphoblastic leukaemia. Conducted on 1,200 patients, the trials helped raise success rates in treatment from 20% to 70%.
