In India, the public spending on healthcare facilities is just above 1% of GDP, making it the lowest healthcare expenditure in the world. The Indian healthcare system has significant limitations related to the infrastructure, workforce, and quality of service. To combat these issues, the Government of India launched the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) in September 2018. The Ayushman Bharat scheme is a step towards Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
What is UHC?UHC involves ensuring that all individuals receive quality health services without suffering from a financial burden. It includes health services such as prevention, promotion, treatment, rehabilitation, and palliation (relief from symptoms). India aims to achieve universal health care for all individuals and communities by 2030. To achieve this goal, the Ayushman Bharat scheme provides Rs 5 lakh insurance cover per family to the poorest 40 percent of the Indian population. The beneficiaries of the scheme can get cashless treatments in any private and public empanelled hospital enlisted by PMJAY.
As of 16th June 2022, there have been 3,38,91,610 hospital admissions under the PMJAY scheme. Moreover, 18,30,71,138 Ayushman Bharat cards have been issued since the scheme's launch in 2018.
Furthermore, under the Ayushman Bharat Health and Wellness Centre, the Indian government committed to transforming 1.5 lakh primary health centres and sub-centres into Health and Wellness Centres (HWCs). These centres will provide a comprehensive range of services, including diagnosing and treating non-communicable and chronic communicable diseases.
